[March 18, 2002] "OSIS has been designed to provide the beginning user with a set of elements sufficient to encode a standard Bible text and yet retain a reasonable learning curve. Additional modules, which extend the OSIS schema to meet the requirements of publishers, translators and scholars are now in the planning stages... After more than a year of collaboration supported by the American Bible Society and the Society of Biblical Literature, the beta of a proposed XML schema has been released." Milestones (asynchronous empty elements) are used for reference markers and other (discourse, prosodic) features which cross the boundaries of the principal literary hierarchy. Many of the elements have a TEIform attribute.
