A communiqué from Charles E. Jones and Patrick Durusau invites submissions for two panel sessions on "Electronic Markup and Publication of Ancient Near Eastern Texts," to be held at the Annual Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in Denver, CO, November 17-20, 2001. The NEML (Near Eastern Markup Language) symposium is jointly sponsored by the Oriental Institute (University of Chicago) and The Society of Biblical Literature. The symposium builds upon the work of a variety of individuals, groups, and organizations to articulate "technical standards for the interchange of Near Eastern data in digital form, seeking to develop stable platforms for the electronic publication of scholarly work in ancient Near Eastern studies utilizing preexisting markup languages and planning for the implementation of widely accepted standards."

[See in general: http://www.oasis-open.org/cover/, and more specifically: http://www.oasis-open.org/cover/xmlMarkupANE.html.]
Following on the success of a number of recent conferences, notably the Electronic Publication Of Ancient Near Eastern Texts conference [http://www-oi.uchicago.edu/OI/AR/99-00/99-00_XML_Conference.html] in Chicago in Autumn 1999, and the Initiative for Cuneiform Encoding (ICE) [http://www.jhu.edu/ice/] conference in Baltimore in Autumn 2000, we seek to institutionalize a forum for the regular presentation of proposal and projects and new developments within the context of larger academic meetings.
Requirements for participating in the SBL Annual Meeting are available at: http://www.sbl-site.org/Congresses/AM/2001/Call_for_Papers/participation_information.html
We plan on two 2 1/2 hours sessions. In accordance with standard SBL practice we expect presentations to be 15-20 minutes long with a short break in the middle of each session.
Please submit proposals for papers to be included in this symposium before March 15th 2001 to: Charles E. Jones cejo@midway.uchicago.edu.
