Announcement and Call for Comments: QAML 2.0X, an XML DTD for FAQs

QAML 2.0X is an XML DTD for marking up FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions), by Justin Higgins (jhiggins@dn.net) of digitalNation Network Services and Rick Jelliffe (ricko@gate.sinica.edu.tw) of Academia Sinica Computing Centre.

It is based on the QAML 1.0 SGML DTD, with backwards-compatible augmentations for XML, I18N (internationalization), XLL hypertext linking, style, accessability and tracking.

It is available online from the FAQ.org website (http://www.faq.org/qaml/) and the Chinese XML Now! website (http://www.ascc.net/xml/).

Comments for improvements are actively sought by the authors. It is anticipated that QAML 2.0 will be finalized late March 1999, with any compatible improvements or corrections included. The improvements should be directed at better linking and resource description, not at inline elements for richer text.

The difference between QAML and HTML is that QAML has been designed to make explicit the simple text structures found in existing FAQs, and to gently constrain future FAQs to those structures, so that they fit in with current FAQ processing systems. However, QAML 2.0 also allows additional attributes which allow conversions to nicer HTML: equivalents of html:li, html:a, and html:pre, for example.
