Nortel Networks Announces Web Services Security Products

Nortel Networks Announces New Security Products and Security Partner Program

Enhanced Portfolio Offers Customers More Choices in Network Security

Santa Clara, California, USA. July 29, 2003.

Nortel Networks today announced new products, product enhancements and a security partner program to provide enterprise customers more capability and choice in network security. Supporting Nortel Networks 'One network. A world of choice' enterprise vision, these product enhancements enable businesses of all sizes to better engage their customers, partners, suppliers and employees in a secure environment, regardless of how or where they access the network.

"Nortel Networks continues to demonstrate expertise in identifying and protecting against security breaches and network abuse. We are providing new, high-performance products with inherent security -- what we call 'Security in the DNA' -- that allow businesses to manage applications securely and free up the network to serve the business as intended," said Oscar Rodriguez, president, Enterprise Solutions, Nortel Networks.

Nortel Networks new Alteon Operating System (AOS) 21.0 software release, currently available for Alteon Application Switch products, provides a number of features to identify and protect against network abuse and attacks. These innovative application layer security features include: Advanced Denial of Service (DoS) Protection that employs sophisticated pattern matching techniques to block a wide variety of attacks; Secure, fault-tolerant Web Services enabled by Extensible Markup Language (XML) and Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) inspection functionality making Alteon Application Switches the first to provide a specialized Web Services-aware traffic management feature that inspects, classifies and directs Web Services traffic; and intelligent peer-to-peer application management enabling companies to proactively control this traffic.

Contributing to the fortified security portfolio is the new Alteon Secure Socket Layer Virtual Private Network software release, version 4.1. Designed for companies that utilize SSL VPNs as their primary means of remote access, it offers dynamic access control to intelligently assess the security level of a client and restricts access accordingly. The ability to process applications reliant on User Datagram Protocol (UDP) enables SSL 4.1 to support real-time collaborative environments securely. Enhanced tools enable Web-based management, thus easing configuration and maintenance. Also, Auto Log-off is used to automatically time-out a session and purge all cached information after a period of inactivity from a secure connection.

"We require a solution that in no way compromises security. At the same time, we need to have an information infrastructure that fosters collaboration among our professional staff, our medical professionals and our partners. The SSL VPN makes it easier to facilitate this collaborative environment. Using the flexibility of Nortel Networks SSL offering, we have managed to create a network that offers the best of both worlds, secure, yet accessible - and that enables us to be engaged to a much greater degree with our patients, provide better patient care and protect the privacy of our patient information," said Howard Rubin, director, Technical Services, Care New England.

In addition to the new AOS 21.0 and SSL VPN releases are enhancements to the Nortel Networks Alteon Application Switch portfolio. The Alteon Application Switch 2208 and 2216 provide the same broad feature set as the industry-proven Alteon Application Switch 2424, but do so with a lower port density, performance/capacity and price that makes this exceptional feature set available to small and medium sized businesses. These new products are optimized for critical and emerging business applications such as IP Telephony, streaming media, video teleconferencing, resource planning, e-mail, file transfer and financial activities.

"This solution is ideal for enterprise customers that have the same need to closely align with their partners and customers as Fortune 500 companies, including the ability to share critical network applications, but don't require the same capacity," added Rodriguez. "These additions to the Alteon portfolio provide industry-leading, application-aware switching performance, not typically available in products targeted at this market segment."

Rounding out the new security portfolio is the Alteon Switched Firewall product line, which includes two significant enhancements, stealth mode deployment and Alteon Switched Firewall 5114. Stealth mode deployment provides intrinsic, high-performance security that cannot be detected by hackers or malicious users. Alteon Switched Firewall 5114 is a new, high-performance platform that provides stateful traffic inspection for small-to-medium-sized businesses, as well as support for segmenting the corporate LAN into distinct security domains, each with their own unique policies, for greater protection and accountability within the enterprise.

The Alteon Expert Advantage Program, also announced today, is a new security certification program for channel partners in North America. The program gives resellers the skills needed to implement application security in large and mid-market companies to help their customers benefit from secure converged and engaged applications. Vendors certified through the Alteon Expert Advantage Program have attained the highest level of competence in the design, implementation and operational support of Alteon security solutions.

"Our customers have relied on us for over 15 years to provide the best-performing infrastructure that supports application collaboration and access for off-site users. At the same time, our customers are striving for best-in-class network security. Nortel Networks Alteon Expert Advantage Program has enabled us to build high performing, accessible networks that have security integrated into its fabric as an alternative to layering security on the infrastructure," said Larry Bantle, president, Conexsys Communications Limited.
