Industry Leaders Usher in Latest Java Enterprise Technology

Shenzhen Kingdee Middleware Brings J2EE 1.4 Technology to People's Republic of China

Sun Microsystems, Inc., the inventor of the Java technology platform, today joined with industry leading Java licensees including BEA Software, Borland Software Corporation, IBM Corporation, Oracle Corporation, Pramati and Trifork in showcasing the latest innovations made possible with Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE) version 1.4 at a press event in San Francisco. Since being finalized in November 2003, J2EE 1.4 has spawned five compatible products in only six months and 15 more have confirmed development schedules. With 35 OEMs and over four million downloads of the J2EE specification and Software Development Kit (SDK), the community is unified and focused on compatibility and standards, with broad adoption that extends to open source solutions providers including Apache Software Foundation, JBoss, Inc. and the Objectweb Consortium.

Sun also announced the latest J2EE 1.4 licensee, Shenzhen Kingdee Middleware Co., Ltd. (Kingdee Middleware) of the People's Republic of China. A leading infrastructure software and services provider, the company plans to certify its Apusic Application Server for J2EE 1.4 compatibility. This move will greatly expand the China market for Java technologies.

Several companies announced their timelines for completing the J2EE 1.4 compatibility certification, including Trifork of Denmark, which announced their J2EE 1.4 compatible Java application server is expected to ship in July of 2004. In addition, ObjectWeb announced its intention to release a J2EE 1.4-compatible application server by the end of 2004. Pramati Technologies of India also announced that its J2EE-compatible application server will be certified for J2EE version 1.4 in Q3 2004. Connector vendors including Attachmate Corporation, iWay Software, Librados and Seagull Software have all announced support for J2EE 1.4 and, at the J2EE Kickoff event today, demonstrated complementary technologies for integrating mission-critical enterprise information systems into new J2EE-based solutions.

The J2EE 1.4 platform is the first open standard platform to drive the convergence of XML and Java technology into Web services and to completely support WS-I Basic Profile conventions for interoperability and implement both the Java API for XML-based RPC (JAX-RPC) and the Enterprise Web services specification (also known as JSR 109) in the Java Community Process (JCP). This evolutionary step from J2EE version 1.3 supports existing J2EE-based applications without modification and allows current J2EE 1.3 deployments to get the full benefits of Web services standards support. J2EE 1.4 also drives faster solution delivery time through reusable components, Enterprise JavaBeans and J2EE Blueprints that provide best practice guides to simplify the development of scalable, available, J2EE-compatible solutions.

More than 90 percent of all application servers use the J2EE technology architecture. The cornerstone of the J2EE platform's success is compatibility, whichenables customers to assemble standards-based integrated stacks from multiple vendors' products. Panels and presentations delivered during today's event highlighted the J2EE development and deployment ecosystem, with platform vendors and tools vendors discussing the impact of Java technology on enterprise computing and the vision for the Java platform going forward.
