Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition 1.4 Kickoff Event 2004
Industry Leaders Usher in Latest Java Enterprise Technology
Shenzhen Kingdee Middleware Brings J2EE 1.4 Technology to People's Republic of China
San Francisco, California, USA. April 26, 2004.
Sun Microsystems, Inc., the inventor of the Java technology platform, today joined with industry leading Java licensees including BEA Software, Borland Software Corporation, IBM Corporation, Oracle Corporation, Pramati and Trifork in showcasing the latest innovations made possible with Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE) version 1.4 at a press event in San Francisco. Since being finalized in November 2003, J2EE 1.4 has spawned five compatible products in only six months and 15 more have confirmed development schedules. With 35 OEMs and over four million downloads of the J2EE specification and Software Development Kit (SDK), the community is unified and focused on compatibility and standards, with broad adoption that extends to open source solutions providers including Apache Software Foundation, JBoss, Inc. and the Objectweb Consortium.
Sun also announced the latest J2EE 1.4 licensee, Shenzhen Kingdee Middleware Co., Ltd. (Kingdee Middleware) of the People's Republic of China. A leading infrastructure software and services provider, the company plans to certify its Apusic Application Server for J2EE 1.4 compatibility. This move will greatly expand the China market for Java technologies.
Several companies announced their timelines for completing the J2EE 1.4 compatibility certification, including Trifork of Denmark, which announced their J2EE 1.4 compatible Java application server is expected to ship in July of 2004. In addition, ObjectWeb announced its intention to release a J2EE 1.4-compatible application server by the end of 2004. Pramati Technologies of India also announced that its J2EE-compatible application server will be certified for J2EE version 1.4 in Q3 2004. Connector vendors including Attachmate Corporation, iWay Software, Librados and Seagull Software have all announced support for J2EE 1.4 and, at the J2EE Kickoff event today, demonstrated complementary technologies for integrating mission-critical enterprise information systems into new J2EE-based solutions.
The J2EE 1.4 platform is the first open standard platform to drive the convergence of XML and Java technology into Web services and to completely support WS-I Basic Profile conventions for interoperability and implement both the Java API for XML-based RPC (JAX-RPC) and the Enterprise Web services specification (also known as JSR 109) in the Java Community Process (JCP). This evolutionary step from J2EE version 1.3 supports existing J2EE-based applications without modification and allows current J2EE 1.3 deployments to get the full benefits of Web services standards support. J2EE 1.4 also drives faster solution delivery time through reusable components, Enterprise JavaBeans and J2EE Blueprints that provide best practice guides to simplify the development of scalable, available, J2EE-compatible solutions.
More than 90 percent of all application servers use the J2EE technology architecture. The cornerstone of the J2EE platform's success is compatibility, whichenables customers to assemble standards-based integrated stacks from multiple vendors' products. The successful J2EE compatible market assures free market competition and continued return on investment, freeing future technology decisions from single vendor constraints. A full listing of J2EE compatible products can be found at http://java.sun.com/j2ee/compatibility.html. J2EE authorized licensees are also listed on the web at http://java.sun.com/j2ee/licensees.html.
"J2EE is the leading enterprise platform in the world today, with the proven security, reliability and standards-based innovation to deliver Web services and service oriented architecture," said Mark Bauhaus, vice president of Java Web Services for Sun Microsystems. "The rich history of the Java platform can be summarized in two words: leadership and innovation. All the vendors here today continue to represent leadership and innovation with their contributions to the Java platform — from the first Java Developer Kit to J2EE 1.4, the gold standard for Web service platform development and deployment."
Panels and presentations delivered during today's event highlighted the J2EE development and deployment ecosystem, with platform vendors and tools vendors discussing the impact of Java technology on enterprise computing and the vision for the Java platform going forward.
"BEA has traditionally helped lead development of Java technologies inside the Java community, and the kickoff of J2EE 1.4 today continues these efforts," said Benjamin Renaud, Deputy CTO, BEA. "By combining BEA's technology innovations with support for J2EE 1.4, we help customers build SOAs that create immediate value, reduce complexity and realize tremendous cost savings."
"The inclusion of Web services in the J2EE 1.4 specification is a significant step toward getting the industry ratified around one Web services interoperability standard for J2EE development," commented George Paolini, vice president and general manager of developer tools at Borland. "J2EE 1.4 also promises to move the industry closer to true J2EE platform independence and further away from fragmentation. Borland has taken the lead on J2EE Web services development with Borland JBuilder and as a fierce proponent of flexibility and choice; we will continue our market leading tradition of easing user adoption of new standards without adding proprietary layers."
"IBM is proud to have been a leader in the creation of J2EE 1.4 as well as being one of the first application server vendors to deliver certified product support for this important new industry standard," according to Bob Sutor, Director of IBM WebSphere Software. "J2EE 1.4 has clearly propelled the Java platform to the forefront of the Web services and SOA world, and will provide real customer value in 2004."
"JBoss and Sun have been working together for several months on many fronts to advance J2EE's prominence in the market. Our support for the kick-off of J2EE 1.4 is just the most recent initiative to unfold between the two companies," said Marc Fleury, president of JBoss Inc. "Both Java developers and enterprise users stand to benefit greatly from the strong commitment we both share to simplifying the Java language. Sun also backs JBoss' drive to deliver the first open source J2EE-compatible application server, which will propel Java deeper into enterprise environments."
"In a world which becomes increasingly complex, the standards become increasingly important including in research projects," said Gérard Giraudon, Director of Development and Technology Transfer, INRIA. "It is necessary to have open reference implementations of standards, which guarantee on the one hand effective interoperability and on the other hand equity between actors."
"The great thing about J2EE 1.4 is that customers get the portability of J2EE and the interoperability of Web services," said Steve Harris, vice president, Java Platform Group, Oracle Corp. "Oracle remains committed to supporting and expanding the J2EE platform, with our early J2EE 1.4 developer preview and the production release of our J2EE productivity layer, Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF)."
"J2EE 1.4 shows the commitment that the licensees share for interoperable industry standards. We're particularly pleased with the advancements in Web services support and enhancements to J2EE Connector Architecture for pluggable adapters and messaging systems," said Gordon Van Huizen, CTO for Sonic Software. "These advancements clearly demonstrate that Sun and the Java community are serious about defining the future of standards-based integration and SOAs."
"Trifork is pleased to be one of the first J2EE technology licensees to bring J2EE 1.4 compatible products to the market," said Kresten Krab Thorup, CTO, Trifork. "Starting July 1 of this year, Trifork will be able to deliver the Trifork T4 application server; a comprehensive solution branded as J2EE 1.4 Compatible."
