Ping Identity and MedCommons Use SAML 2.0 for Electronic Health Record Access
Ping Identity and MedCommons Partner to Enable Standards-based Web Single Sign-On to Electronic Health Records
Secure Multi-Location Electronic Health Record Access and Storage to be Demonstrated at HIMSS Conference
San Diego, California, USA. February 14, 2006.
Ping Identity, the leading independent provider of federated identity and Web single sign-on (SSO) software, and MedCommons, the creator of the first nationally scalable standards-based network service for cross-enterprise and cross-system document sharing of patient information, today announced a partnership to develop secure, standards-based, single sign-on solutions for multi-location electronic health record access and storage. Ping Identity and MedCommons will demonstrate this new solution at the Interoperability Showcase at the HIMSS conference in San Diego. Other participants in the showcase include Sun Microsystems and Novell. The Interoperability Showcase will be located at Booth 7319 in the Sails Pavilion of the San Diego Convention Center.
Ping Identity's products and services help organizations easily and cost effectively bridge security domains across partner, supplier and customer organizations by providing secure Web SSO. MedCommons has developed the first standards-based system capable of communicating with and transferring image and non-image data among Personal Health Records, Electronic Health Records (EHR) and national healthcare IT systems.
"We are pleased to work with MedCommons to address secure portability, one of the key issues surrounding medical information today," commented Bob Smith, Ping Identity President and COO. "Ping is committed to creating a world-class product with MedCommons to enable secure Web SSO so that patients and physicians can log in from doctors' offices, hospitals or their homes and access MedCommons without having to enter another username and password."
Standardizing on SAML 2.0
Both Ping Identity and MedCommons are committed to SAML 2.0 as the standard of choice for secure authentication precisely because it provides for the convergence of non-interoperable standards that support Web SSO.
After significant testing of alternative providers, MedCommons determined that PingFederate Version 3 was the easiest SAML 2.0 product to acquire, install, configure, integrate, and deploy. MedCommons quickly integrated PingFederate v3 into their medical data network and secure storage solution, enabling Web SSO using SAML 2.0.
"We are excited to have Ping as a partner", said Bill Donner MedCommons CEO. "We have looked at a number of potential solution providers to the single sign-on issue and determined that Ping Identity provided the most compelling technology and product experience."
PingFederate's best-of-breed functionality provides sophisticated yet easy-to-use interfaces for setting up and managing Web SSO interactions. Moreover, PingFederate provides the benefits of standards-based Web SSO without the cost and complexity of a heavyweight identity management system. PingFederate is also the only federation server with a Software Development Kit and a suite of downloadable Integration Kits to quickly integrate with existing applications or identity/Web access management system (both commercial and home-grown).
MedCommons develops, markets and sells a national network for sharing authoritative patient medical information amongst doctors, hospitals and their patients MedCommons medical record transport service, The Commons, is the first standards-based patient and physician-accessible network connecting Personal Health Records (PHR), Electronic Health Record (EHR) and national healthcare IT systems. To facilitate enterprise integration, MedCommons also supports Liberty Alliance standard single-sign-on protocols and DICOM standard radiology images. [See: http://www.medcommons.org/]
