Intergraph Data Server Supports GML and OpenGIS Web Feature Services (WFS)

Intergraph Advances Open Data Exchange of Geospatial Information with New GML and WFS Interoperability Extensions

Free Desktop GeoMedia Viewer to Enable GML and WFS Query and Viewing Capabilities

Huntsville, Alabama, USA. July 21, 2003.

Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions today announced that two free interoperability extensions are available for download: the OpenGIS Geographic Markup Language (GML) and the OpenGIS Web Feature Services (WFS) data servers, as well as the GML export command. These extensions are designed for any GeoMedia 5.1 product. Additionally, the OpenGIS Web Map Server (WMS) adapter kit for easy creation of a WMS server is now available for GeoMedia WebMap products.

Users can query and view data accessed via the WFS interface through GeoMedia Viewer 5.1, Intergraph's free and easy-to-use GIS software application for desktop viewing and distribution of geospatial data. GeoMedia Viewer gives professionals access to geospatial vector and raster data in open formats or through open interfaces, including GML and WFS as well as previously available formats - Access, ArcView and MapInfo. By allowing data servers to be accessed simultaneously, GeoMedia Viewer offers the functionality to integrate and overlay spatial information while providing dynamic updates as the source information changes. With GeoMedia Viewer, organizations can maximize the value of their geospatial data by extending availability to novice users who otherwise would not have access.

To order a free copy of GeoMedia Viewer, visit http://imgs.intergraph.com/gviewer/. Professionals can also download the data servers at http://imgs.intergraph.com/interop/.

"These free interoperability extensions further promote data sharing across different platforms, vendor brands and networks, thus increasing collaboration and communication between organizations and users," said Fiona McKee, Global Program Manager Education and Interoperability, Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions. "Intergraph continues to drive open data exchange to put virtually any geospatial information available via the Web at the user's fingertips."

Carl Reed, executive director of the OpenGIS Consortium (OGC) specification program, commented: "The WFS and GML extensions to the GeoMedia product line once again demonstrate Intergraph's leadership and commitment to open standards and the vision of the OGC. Intergraph's endorsement of WFS will serve to accelerate the use and adoption of this important OpenGIS interface specification in the marketplace."

Promoting Interoperability to Geoenable Mainstream IT and the Web

From conception, Intergraph's GeoMedia solutions have been built with open interoperability principles in mind. Therefore, the WMS, WFS and GML data servers and other open functionality are smooth and complementary additions to the products' architecture. Intergraph also has established a number of initiatives to further advocate interoperability, including:

  • Strategic-level Support of the Open GIS Consortium: As a founding member of the OpenGIS consortium and now the only GIS vendor participating as a Strategic Member, Intergraph remains committed to helping define interoperability standards that promote the open use of GIS data.

  • Development of the Open Geospatial Network: Intergraph established the Open Geospatial Network to serve as a portal to all open OGC-compliant Web services, providing users easy access to a broad range of spatial services. This readily accessible, central catalog facilitates the creation of a Global Spatial Data Infrastructure. Participation in the Network is open to any organization whose Web services conform to OpenGIS specifications, enabling users to freely access spatial information. Web Map Server (WMS) data can be viewed through Intergraph's free WMS client viewer freely accessible via the Web at the portal, www.geospatial.net, or by visiting www.wmsviewer.com.

  • Establishment of the Open Interoperability Grant Program: Intergraph's Open Interoperability Grant Program is designed to stimulate the use of open interoperability standards through the support of organizations desiring to build Web services using OGC standards or organizations wishing to publish their data in XML and GML formats. Organizations can qualify for one of 100 available grants that have a total commercial value of $5.5 million (U.S).

The GML Data Server will be featured at the Cambridge Conference, July 21 - 25, 2003 in Cambridge, UK. For more information about Intergraph's open solutions, visit www.intergraph.com/gis.
