Leaders of the DISA Registry Initiative Issue Call for Participation
Alexandria, VA, USA. June 1, 2001.
The Data Interchange Standards Association (DISA) released today a call for individuals and companies to take part in the DISA Registry Initiative (DRIve). DRIve will seek contributions of software, systems, and technical expertise to create the architecture for and operations of a registry of data objects developed by standards organizations affiliated with DISA. These organizations include:
Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) X12
OpenTravel Alliance (OTA)
Interactive Financial eXchange (IFX) Forum
Mortgage Industry Standards Maintenance Organization (MISMO)
Open Philanthropy eXchange (OPX) Forum
Hotel Electronic Distribution Network Association (HEDNA)
"We are looking for a diverse mix of users and providers from DISA's affiliated organizations to contribute their much-needed expertise to launch DRIve, and ultimately develop this essential tool for the e-business standards community," said DISA President Jerry C. Connors.
Collectively, DISA's affiliates include over 1,000 companies representing multiple industries around the world. DRIve participants must be DISA affiliate members. DISA will also coordinate this work with other relevant committees and groups in the Organisation for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) and United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT) as required.
"GE Global eXchange Services (GXS) supports the efforts of DISA in developing DRIve as a means to further enable companies of all sizes, in any location, to participate in B2B e-commerce," said Jeff Eck, global product manager for GXS. "As a participant in the ebXML definition and proof of concept process, we believe that DRIve in conjunction with global specifications such as ebXML will make it easier for buyers to find sellers and conduct business electronically."
The DRIve registry will meet the requirements of the Electronic Business Extensible Markup Language (ebXML) registry/repository specifications, which include the Registry Services Specification, version 1.0, and the Registry Information Model, version 1.0, approved on May 11. DRIve will also follow other approved ebXML specifications and technical reports affecting the operation of the registry.
"This initiative is very important to the ManTech Enterprise Integration Center (e-IC)," said Robert S. Kidwell, Vice President and Senior Technical Director for ManTech e-IC. "The e-IC team has embraced XML in all of its leading electronic commerce and electronic data interchange applications such as the U.S. DoD customs clearance project, which involves the shipment of military cargo within eleven foreign countries, and the U.S. DoD Medical E-CAT system, which is a distributed Web application for DoD procurement of key medical supplies. We feel that the DISA initiative will provide the initial foundation for migrating the traditional X12 EDI semantics into a framework that is consistent with that of the ebXML distributed registry and repository vision."
DRIve will include the basic functions of ebXML registries and its interactions with a DISA repository, as spelled out in the relevant specifications. These functions will:
- Register objects in the associated DISA repository submission, identification, classification, approval
- Manage registered objects maintaining current versions, deprecating and removing obsolete versions
- Search for registered objects in DISA and related repositories browse/drill-down and filtering functions defined in the ebXML Registry Information Model specification
- Retrieve lists of registered objects, according to search criteria
- Retrieve registered objects from the DISA repository
- Provide security for the registry and stored objects
- Provide access to customers with thin-client, full-function client, and peer-level server software
- Send and receive ebXML-compliant messages through Internet transport protocols
- Return acknowledgments and ebXML-defined error messages
"We are very pleased to be working with DISA on the DRIve initiative," said David Webber, Vice President of Business Development for XML Global Technologies. "We have committed considerable resources to the ebXML initiative, specifically those concerning registries and this relationship with DISA will give us an excellent opportunity to showcase our XML skills. The DRIve initiative has important implications for the future of global e-business and fits perfectly within the ebXML distributed registry and repository vision. We look forward to making a positive contribution and to working with a first rate international team."
The DRIve initiative will consist of a:
- Steering Group, responsible for setting policies, providing direction, and monitoring progress
- Working Group, charged with conducting technical work, evaluating and selecting contributions, acquiring and installing software, conducting tests and demonstrations, preparing project documentation, and certifying readiness for live operations.
The call for participation in the Steering Committee extends through June 15. The call for participation in the working group is ongoing. For additional information on DRIve, please contact Alan Kotok at akotok@disa.org or +1 703-518-4174.
DISA is home for industry groups developing cross-industry e-business standards that provide the foundation enabling individuals and organizations to participate in global e-business. Propelling global e-business, DISA and ASC X12 serve as the entry point for the United States into the United Nations/Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport (UN/EDIFACT), an international standard relating to the exchange of trade goods and services.
