A new release of the HoTMetaL HTML editor, Windows version,
is now available for downloading from

The new version has a dialog box interface for insertion
of special characters defined for HTML and incorporates Dave
Raggett's TIDY filter which does what it can to bring
old-style HTML files into conformance with the HTML 2.0
draft standard. Both of these capabilities were previously
available only in the commercial version.

While the freeware version does not include our WYSIWYG table
editing module, dialog boxes provide support for the elements
and attributes used to create tables. The new HoTMetaL also
includes a "rules file" which may be swapped in to get support
for some Netscape extensions.

HoTMetaL is mirrored at many sites around the world, but as
of this week, watch for the filename "hotm1new.exe", which tells you it's
the new version. Pick up the install.txt too. The SoftQuad HomePage,
will generally have a list of updated HoTMetaL sites.

As always, your comments are welcome at, but
please remember that this is free, unsupported software for
non-commercial use.

As with previous versions of the software, its strength is
the guidance it gives you in creating valid HTML documents
which will work on *any* HTML browser. The new version helps you create
documents which fully conform to the IETF draft standard for HTML 2.0.

Thanks to all of you who have encouraged us to make this
software available. We appreciate your comments and suggestions.
