I work as a computing development officer at the University of Exeter and part of my job is to continue and extend the aims of the SGML Project. This is a JISC funded project based at the University of Exeter. Its aim is to provide an information service about SGML and its applications. When the SGML Project was started in 1991, it was considered to be a centre of SGML information and expertise. Since then, HTML has shot to huge prominence because of its ease of use and instant practicality and subject-specific web sites have become important primary sources of information. There is a particular group of people that we would like to encourage to find out more about SGML: people who do not consider themselves computer experts but who are thinking of embarking on a computer-based project in their specialist field; they would consider using SGML but need to have more information about it and see examples of previous projects to convince them fully: The SGML Project at Exeter aims to do the following: 1. Continue the maintenance of the FTP server at Exeter providing SGML applications, information about these applications and a FAQ file. (ftp.ex.ac.uk/pub/SGML/) 2. Develop the SGML web pages at Exeter so that they contain not only information about what SGML is but also provide news about the use of SGML in research projects. (http://www.ex.ac.uk/SGML/newsgml.html) 3. Continue to maintain the SGML Mailbase list. The discussion list does provide a forum for quick and informal exchange of ideas and news.. To provide more information and examples, we would be very grateful if outlines of projects could be sent to the list for me to collect together and summarize on the Web pages. All suggestions as to what kind of information about SGML people would like to see are very welcome Katherine Fenton ***************************************** Katherine Fenton Humanities Computing Development Officer Pallas, Computing in the Arts Faculty of Arts Queen's Building University of Exeter Tel 01392 264291 *****************************************
