[Attached is a message from Liora Alschuler about an HL7 related seminar in
conjunction with the Paris conference. Please resond directly to Liora if
you are interested in participating.]

The support for structured markup (SGML and XML) in healthcare applications and healthcare exchange standards is expanding rapidly and with that support, the need to communicate and coordinate efforts across national boundaries. To address this need Prof. Dr. Joachim Dudeck, Institut fuer Medizinische Informatik, Justus-Liebig-Universitaet Giessen, and myself, Liora Alschuler, Chair of Kona Editorial Group, HL7 SGML/XML SIG are pleased to announce a day dedicated to SGML/XML standards and applications in healthcare preceeding the Paris GCA conference, SGML/XML Europe '98.

This event will take place on Monday, May 18, at the conference site, the Hotel Sofitel, Paris and is open to all participants. (See http://www.gca.org/conf/paris98/paris.htm )

The Monday program will include reports on the use of SGML/XML within the British National Health Service, CEN TC251, HL7, DICOM, HANSA, and other standards and commercial applications. While we will have short reports on these projects during the regular conference program on Wednesday, May 20, the full day schedule will allow a much-needed forum to exchange information and ideas.

We anticipate that the final program for the day will include a short tutorial on SGML/XML and its benefits for medical records; reports on current efforts in the EU and US; and an open discussion of the issues facing all of us involved in this work as we move toward a formulation of the place of documents and structured text within the electronic medical record and the new, XML-based World Wide Web.

If you would like to be part of the program, please send a short summary of your proposed presentation copied to both Prof. Dudeck (joachim.dudeck@informatik.med.uni-giessen.de) and Liora Alschuler (liora@the-word-electric.com) by March 27. We will formalize and publish the day's speakers in early April. Please feel free to cross-post this announcement to appropriate lists and forums.

Many thanks to Marion Elledge, VP for Information Technologies of the GCA and Pamela Gennusa, Conference Chair, SGML/XML '98 Europe for their support of this effort.
