Submission request to W3C (W3C Team Comment)


We, W3C member NEC Corporation hereby submit to the Consortium the following specification, comprising the following document(s) attached hereto:

  1. XML Document Navigation Language

which is referred to as "the submission". We request the submission be known as the XDNL submission.

Abstract

With the diversity of accessing devices, WWW content needs to be designed for both PC and non-PC devices, so that it can be appropriately navigated and rendered by each type of devices. This note focuses on the navigation of content which helps the user to easily browse a huge document on relatively small devices. The general idea of navigation is explained, and a new language, the XML Document Navigation Language (XDNL) is proposed in this note.

Intellectual property Rights

In the event that this contribution, or portions thereof, are adopted as a W3C Recommendation, and the Recommendation cannot be practiced without the use of one or more NEC patents, NEC agrees upon written request to grant a non-exclusive license under such patents on a non-discriminatory basis and on reasonable terms and conditions, including royalty rates; and provided a similar grant under licensee's patents within the scope of the license granted to licensee is made available upon request to NEC. NEC has one potential patent closely related to this contributtion, which has been applied for.

NEC expressly reserves all other rights it may have in the material and subject matter of this contribution. NEC expressly disclaims any and all warranties regarding this contribution including any warranty that this contribution does not violate the rights of others or is fit for a particular purpose.

Specification

The submission may distributed within the membership of the W3C free of any fee. The submission may be distributed publicly free of any fee under the redistribution terms expressed in the W3C copyright statement.

The following points should be noted as regards licensable technology involved in any third party implementations of the technology specified in the submission: None

Suggested action

We suggest that the Consortium publishes this proposal as is, and works on identified open and future issues within existing working groups/interest groups in the User Interface Domain especially the XSL working group as well as the "Mobile Access" IG.

Resources

To help with this work, we expect to be able to provide one non-resident document editor and/or a full time resident visiting engineers to the Consortium.

Change control

Should any changes be required to the document, we would expect future versions to be produced by W3C process
