The Tutorials

The Sunday and Monday before the conference, and the Friday following the conference, have been reserved for full-day tutorials on a range of technical and management topics. Delegates can get an introduction to SGML in German or English, and discuss the fine points of HyTime and DSSSL amongst other topics. Two of the tutorials are sponsored by the Electronic Publishing Special Interest Group (EPSIG), covering ISO 12083 and publishing on the Web.

3A&B - INTRODUCTION TO THE DOCUMENT STYLE SEMANTICS AND SPECIFICATIONS LANGUAGE (DSSSL)

DSSSL, ISO/IEC 10179, is an International Standard for the formatting and other processing of SGML documents. This two-day tutorial provides an overview of the concepts on which the language is based as well as detailed examples. Formatting issues are examined on Sunday; transformation issues on Monday.
4A&B - THE ELIOT KIMBER HYTIME COURSE

This HyTime Tutorial covers all aspects of the standard (ISO 10744), providing attendees with a technical expertise that they can apply to problems that they alone cannot solve. 5A- THE WORLD WIDE WEB*

5 - PRACTICAL SGML AND ISO 12083 - ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING STANDARD*

PART 1: PRACTICAL SGML This tutorial provides a non-technical introduction to SGML, and shows how by introducing structure, SGML can be used to create a final product whose value to the client is long term. It presents a complete overview of SGML giving the participant the necessary information to make a decision to use SGML - continue using it.
PART 2: ISO 12083: THE ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING STANDARD The aim of this tutorial is to provide professional publishers, librarians, and information scientists with in-depth knowledge of ISO 12083. This knowledge should help them build an SGML publishing system based on ISO 12083. Numerous examples are given to illustrate the 'tricky' parts of the standard, such as modifying the DTDs to be compatible with the standard, such as modifying the DTDs to be compatible with the standard, mathematics, and how to include tabular material.
