The Next Decade - Pushing the Envelope
Conference Chair:
Pamela Gennusa
Director
Database Publishing Systems Ltd.
In October 1996, the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML), ISO 8879,
celebrates its first decade; a decade of many exciting and innovative
applications. But now where is the use of SGML going? What will the next
decade bring? How will we be using SGML in the years to come? Join us at
SGML Europe '97 to explore what "pushing the envelope" will mean to and for
users of the Standard.
"SGML Europe will continue to be a good place to
see much of what is innovative in the SGML world."
Seybold Report on Publishing Systems,
June 30, 1996 issue

What is SGML Europe?
SGML Europe is GCA's annual comprehensive conference on applications,
trends, and the technologies that support the Standard Generalized Markup
Language (ISO 8879) and related standards. The 1997 event taking place in
Barcelona, Spain will inaugurate a new decade of SGML, a decade of "pushing
the envelope" to innovative applications.
What is SGML?
SGML, the Standard Generalized Markup Language, was adopted as ISO 8879 in
1986. Since the introduction 10 years ago, SGML is being used by an ever
broadening number of organizations to assist in a variety of content
management and delivery applications. It is a product independent generic
markup language that supports the use of information in a variety of ways
from the same text source. SGML adds value to information. It supports the
re-use and control of information. It facilitates the development of
multimedia products; separates content from process; and is an important
tool for all aspects of information management. With the rapid changes in
technology, the growth of the Web and internet/intranet applications, the
benefits of SGML are becoming more and more apparent.
"In the US, CALS forced the defense industry to deal with SGML, which led
industries such as aerospace and semiconductors to follow along. In Europe,
no such massive forced adoption of SGML occurred. The Standard spread into
a variety of application areas on its own merits, not by fiat."
Seybold Report
June 30, 1996
"(SGML Europe '96) was a showcase for a surprising amount of innovation..."

on investment now, tell us how the use of SGML meets your current economic

want to hear from you. Tell us how you anticipate SGML may be used in the
future.
