RE: SGML'96 POSTERS
YOU ARE INVITED to be part of the SGML'96 Conference
in Boston, November 18-22. The program is already full,
but it is *not too late* to participate. Give a poster!
------------------------------------------
WHAT IS A POSTER ?
A "poster" is actually a bulletin board that displays
several large, poster-sized pieces of paper. Your
posters can provide an overview of a technical topic,
problem, question, product, or case study. Think of a
poster as an opportunity to publish a very short
article and discuss it with your peers. Posters are on view
from Monday morning through Wednesday night,
so the ideas should be clear even when you aren't there.
------------------------------------------
PEOPLE VIEW POSTERS DURING A POSTER SESSION
During SGML'96 Poster Sessions, there are no speeches or
presentations. Attendees wander through the gallery of posters
as they might visit an exhibit hall. Posters are grouped by topic,
and a Poster Program is distributed to all attendees before the
conference.
You stand next to your poster for at least half an hour during
one of the two poster sessions, to talk to the people and answer
questions. You become the center of a discussion group concerning
your topic.
------------------------------------------
WHY POSTER SESSIONS? BECAUSE POSTERS:
* Increase the number of people and the variety of
points of view and opinions presented at the meeting!
* Encourage two-way communication (as opposed to the
one-way communication inherent in a lecture);
* Allow detailed or esoteric presentations; and
* Provide a forum for "small" presentations.
------------------------------------------
THERE WILL BE TWO POSTER SESSIONS:
Monday morning: 11:00 AM to 12:45
Wednesday morning: 11:15 AM to 12:45
------------------------------------------
WHAT DOES A POSTER PRESENTER DO?
During a Poster Session: Be enthusiastic. Talk to
people. Listen to people. Your function as a
presenter is to converse with people interested in
your topic. Expect a lot of questions. Learn from
your audience; ask them questions. There will be
Post-It notes with each poster so people can ask you
questions even if you aren't there. Check your
poster throughout the conference! (Hint: never leave
anything on or with your poster that you do not intend
to be a handout!)
