XML Unlocks Secret of Customizing Delivered Applications

BURLINGAME, Calif., May 10, 1999—At Oracle iDevelop™ ’99 today, Oracle Corp. announced the beta release of Oracle® Business Components for Java, the only Java application framework to radically enhance developer productivity and ensure scalability for enterprise applications. Today, developers typically spend a significant amount of time writing business logic. Business Components for Java will enhance productivity by enabling developers to reuse and customize the same business logic across multiple applications.

With the industry shift towards purchasing packaged applications and away from completely custom development, the ability to tailor packaged applications becomes essential for customers to achieve an exact fit to their business needs. Business Components for Java will exploit XML’s powerful ability to describe data in a structured way and leverage it to manage an application’s metadata. As a result, customizing an application becomes as easy as editing XML information.

"Oracle Business Components for Java promises to increase software development ROI by shielding the developer from some of the low-level details, allowing them to focus on developing business rules for an application," said George "Tad" Bristow, partner, Management Consulting Services at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Executing entirely in the database, Business Components for Java fully utilize the server for Java inside Oracle8i™ (Oracle8i JServer) to provide the only Java framework scalable up to tens of thousands of users. With Business Components for Java, applications can be written once and deployed across multiple platforms utilizing industry standard APIs such as Enterprise JavaBeans and CORBA. In addition, this framework enables developers to write scalable business logic as the framework provides full control over SQL and the database interactions.

"Until now we have not found anything capable of delivering this level of productivity. It will revolutionize the way we build our applications in Java," said Mark E. Johnson, assistant vice president Sales and Marketing Systems at Bank One.

Business Components for Java is a set of Java framework classes and wizards that function as add-ins to Oracle JDeveloper 2.0, which shipped today (see related announcement). The wizards allow developers to focus on the business logic rather than the low-level database interactions. The framework automatically optimizes the database interaction.

"Business Components for Java delivers the industry’s first enterprise application framework for reusing and customizing business logic," said Sohaib Abbasi, senior vice president of Oracle’s Tools division. "By leveraging Oracle8i, Java applications built with the framework will be able to scale beyond the enterprise."

More information on Business Components for Java is available from the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) at http://technet.oracle.com. Developers can also register via OTN for a beta version of the technology.
