From owner-davenport@berkshire.net Mon Jun 29 15:49:44 1998 Date: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 09:54:37 -0700 From: "Karl F. Best" <kbest@adobe.com> Subject: DAVENPORT: Welcome to OASIS
As Eve has announced, the sponsors of the Davenport Committee, owners and maintainers of the DocBook DTD, have recently voted to turn over those responsibilities to OASIS, the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (http://www.oasis-open.org), formerly known as SGML Open. The technical work previously sponsored by Davenport will now take place as a technical subcommittee of OASIS, and OASIS will host the DocBook mail lists and web pages.
The next meeting of the Davenport Committee, now called the DocBook Technical Committee under OASIS, will be held in conjunction with the OASIS Summer Workshop held 29-31 July 1998 in San Diego, California. The DocBook TC will be meeting on Thursday the 30th; the agenda for this meeting includes election of a chair for the DocBook committee and the setting of the agenda for future technical work on the DTD for both SGML and XML.
Ordinarily attendence at the OASIS Summer Workshop is open only to employees of member organizations (see http://www.oasis-open.org/html/members.htm for a list). Because the Davenport Committee has been an fairly open organization a bit of a transition will be required: people who have participated in Davenport committee meetings or the Davenport mail alias but who do not belong to an OASIS member organization are invited to the San Diego meeting as an introduction to the new Technical Committee and to help set the technical agenda. Beginning with the San Diego meeting the following policies will govern the committee:
Any employee of an OASIS member organization may participate in the DocBook TC. Non-OASIS members may join the TC as an "invited expert" if invited by the TC chair. (Current Davenport sponsors and editors have already been invited.)
Non-OASIS members who are not invited to join the TC may continue to participate on the Davenport mail alias, to be known as the DocBook SIG.
If you are an employee of an OASIS member organization, please go to the OASIS home page, under the Members Only section, to register for the Summer Workshop. If you are not an employee of an OASIS member organization, please register with me (kbest@adobe.com) so that we can have a head count for lunches. In either case you are responsible for your own travel and hotel reservations. The hotel is:
San Diego Doubletree
Carmel Highland Resort
14455 Penasquitos Drive
San Diego, CA 92129
Tel: +1.619.672.9100
Make your hotel reservations by contacting the hotel directly. Ask for the "SGML Open/OASIS" rate of $105/night (single or double).
Note that only DocBook TC activities will be open to non-OASIS members; OASIS general meetings, dinners, and evening activities are open to OASIS members only.
