NISO Standards Free on the Web

  • [November 05, 2000]   NISO Standards Free on the Web.    Pat Harris (Executive Director, National Information Standards Organization - NISO) recently posted an announcement to the effect that "all NISO standards and technical reports are now available for free in downloadable PDF files from the NISO website. From the NISO homepage (http://www.niso.org/) click on the NISO Press icon, and then click on Standards, Books and Software. You can search for the title you want or review a list of all the approved and published NISO standards and technical reports. 'Very few standards developers have elected to make their standards available for free on the web,' noted NISO chair Don Muccino. 'NISO is clearly taking the lead in making its standards freely available to support the widest possible dissemination of our publications. The NISO Board believes that free distribution and easy access to our standards supports implementation.' This new NISO service is made possible by NISO's seventy-five Voting Members and the libraries supporting the NISO Information Standards Forum. NISO will continue to sell its standards in hardcopy both on the web and through NISO Press Fulfillment." A number of NISO's technical initiatives and standards relate to SGML and XML, including: (1) Draft Standard Z39.85-200X, The Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (see the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set TC, NISO Fast Track); (2) the Digital Talking Book; (3) Technical Metadata for Digital Still Images (Data Dictionary -- Technical Metadata for Digital Still Images, per DIG35: Metadata Standard for Digital Images recommendations); (4) ANSI/NISO/ISO 12083 Electronic Manuscript Preparation and Markup ("The standard specifies the SGML declaration defining the syntax used by the document type definitions [DTD] and document instances, and a definition for mathematics which may be embedded in other SGML applications").
