By Dieter Fensel (University of Innsbruck) and Christoph Bussler (Oracle Corporation). From the Resources Collection of the Semantic Web Services Initiative (SWSI). April 2003. 36 pages (slides). Web Services will transform the web from a collection of information into a distributed device of computation. In order to reach full potential, appropriate description means for web services need to be developed. For this purpose we developed a full-fledged Web Service Modeling Framework (WSMF) that provides the appropriate conceptual model for developing and describing web services and their composition. http://www.swsi.org/resources/wsmf.pdf http://xml.coverpages.org/xmlPapers200309.html#FenselWSMF "From UML to BPEL: Model Driven Architecture in a Web Services World." By Keith Mantell (IT Architect, IBM). From IBM developerWorks, Web Services. September 9, 2003. BPEL is an XML-based standard for defining how you can combine Web services to implement business processes. This article describes a new tool from the Emerging Technologies Toolkit version 1.1 (ETTK) released on IBM alphaWorks which takes processes defined in the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and generates the corresponding BPEL and WSDL files to implement that process. http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/webservices/library/ws-uml2bpel/ http://xml.coverpages.org/xmlPapers200309.html#Mantell "XKMS Does the Heavy Work of PKI." By Rich Salz (DataPower Technology). In Network World (September 08, 2003). Public-key infrastructure is well suited for securing Web services, but PKI deployment is too cumbersome and costly for the technology to achieve widespread use. An upcoming XML Key Management Specification (XKMS) standard from W3C aims to reduce the costs of PKI without sacrificing its benefits; it borrows the best of PKI without reducing scalability or security. http://www.nwfusion.com/news/tech/2003/0908techupdate.html http://xml.coverpages.org/xmlPapers200309.html#SalzXKMS "WhereNet Adds BI to RFID Asset Management. By Jack McCarthy and Ed Scannell. In InfoWorld (September 06, 2003). ['IT services companies help deliver on the promise of a new computing paradigm. From InfoWorld's Special Report on "Outsourcing Web Services", Web Services on a Platter'] A couple of years ago, in the hype over Web services, IT leaders were told that their prayers would at last be answered. A simple set of XML-based protocols would enable IT to create reusable application building blocks that could be recombined ad infinitum, slashing application-development and maintenance costs. Of course, that hasn't happened. http://www.infoworld.com/article/03/09/05/35FEws-soamain_1.html http://xml.coverpages.org/xmlPapers200309.html#WSPlatter "Portal Vendors Rallying Around Standards."
