Harbinger Supports Microsoft BizTalk Framework for Adoption of XML in Electronic Commerce

ATLANTA, GA - September 23, 1999 - Harbinger Corporation (NASDAQ:HRBC), a worldwide supplier of Electronic Commerce software, services and solutions, announced today that it is working with Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) to support the development of its BizTalk Framework, a newly developed tool that promises to advance the adoption of eXtensible Markup Language (XML) in Electronic Commerce. Separately, Harbinger also announced that it is collaborating with Microsoft to establish standards, incorporating XML schema and guidelines, for use with online catalog data management systems.

Harbinger is supporting BizTalk in four key areas: First, Harbinger is integrating BizTalk into new products from its Harbinger Labs Division. Second, Harbinger is collaborating with Microsoft to establish standards for online catalog data management. Third, Harbinger is enabling its harbinger.netSM E-Commerce network portal to exchange BizTalk-compatible XML documents, thus immediately enabling all of its network customers with online access to XML from popular data translation standards. Finally, Harbinger plans to support the BizTalk Framework across its TrustedLink™ family of mapping and translation software products, which will give Harbinger's 40,000 customers on-site translation capabilities for BizTalk-compatible XML documents.

"Harbinger's alliance with Microsoft and its support for the BizTalk initiative demonstrates our drive and desire to stay one step ahead in providing the market with next generation products and services," said Les Wyatt, Vice President of Product Marketing and Management for Harbinger. "BizTalk offers Harbinger an excellent base upon which to build and create a structured XML framework and extend its core competence in data translation. XML has the potential to become the Internet E-Commerce standard of choice, and together with Microsoft, we expect to help drive acceptance and agreement for XML in the marketplace."

The BizTalk Framework enables companies with different software applications and programming languages to exchange data in the form of business transactions with their customers and suppliers. BizTalk technology is based on XML, an Internet-centric language that incorporates attributes of HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) technologies. The BizTalk Framework includes a design framework for implementing an XML schema and a set of XML tags used in messages sent between applications. Microsoft and Harbinger, other software companies and industry standards bodies will use the BizTalk Framework to produce XML schema in a consistent manner enabling integration across industries and business systems, regardless of platform, operating system or underlying technology. More information about the BizTalk Framework is available at www.biztalk.org.

"Microsoft is delighted to have the support of an E-Commerce leader such as Harbinger to help accelerate the adoption of XML in Web applications," said Microsoft Industry Manager for E-Commerce, Marcus Schmidt. "Its experience in deploying real-world data translation solutions will encourage industry leaders to look more closely at the BizTalk Framework for XML, setting the stage for its widespread acceptance and utilization."
