CALL FOR PAPERS 20th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER2001) November 27-30 (Conference/Tutorial/Workshop), Yokohama, Japan http://www.ynu.ac.jp/ER2001/ This, the 20th ER Conference, the first of the 21st century, is also the first to be held in Japan. ER2001 welcomes you to Yokohama, a bustling city a short distance from Tokyo. SCOPE OF THE CONFERENCE Progress in computers and networks is changing our business activities and our personal environments. Business practices must evolve dramatically to survive amidst worldwide competition, where information services play a key role. Individuals must cope in a world of over-abundant information, where everything is available, but difficult to find. Conceptual modeling may provide a path, for both businesses and individuals, to richer information exchange and thus fill an essential role in the Internet-based information revolution. ER2001 encompasses the entire spectrum of conceptual modeling, from the theoretical to implementations, including fundamentals, applications, and software engineering. We invite researchers and practitioners from both computer sciences and management information systems. Reports of new ideas and approaches, useful experiences and informative experiments are all welcome. Regular and industrial papers are solicited. In particular, ER2001 will emphasize e-business and reengineering. Relevant topics include the following: CENTRAL TOPICS Conceptual Modeling for Business or Personal Environments: - e-business applications - groupware/workflow management - mobile database services - advanced applications -- GIS, engineering/scientific, etc. - data warehouses and data mining - information retrieval - information customization and user profiles - information services for the citizen Conceptual Modeling in Information System Engineering / Reengineering: - IS development methodologies, languages, tools - object oriented, design patterns and other methodologies - reuse and reengineering - software engineering and tools, application design with UML - information visualization and tools - information integration Theoretical Foundations for Conceptual Modeling: - information modeling concepts, including ontologies - design methodologies (ER, OO, ORM, and others) - schema transformation, schema evolution - modeling of semistructured data (on the web and in XML) - heterogeneous and federated databases - spatial, temporal, and multimedia databases Other topics whose main theme is conceptual modeling are welcome. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Regular Papers Authors of regular papers are invited to send an abstract (100- 200 words) by April 20, 2001 and submit the full paper (less than 5,000 words) by May 1, 2001. Selected papers will be considered for publication as extended versions in the Data & Knowledge Engineering journal. All submissions shall be made electronically through the ER2001 web site, http://www.ynu. ac.jp/ER2001 where details can be found Industrial Presentations We solicit submissions for industrial contributions. Reports on significant results or problems encountered are especially valuable to the research community. Short abstracts (100 words) and extended abstracts (at most 1,000 words) can be submitted via the ER2001 web site prior to May 1, 2001. PROCEEDINGS The proceedings will be published by Springer-Verlag in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series in time for distribution at the conference. They will contain regular and invited papers and industrial presentations and will be available as a full-text electronic version of LNCS. TUTORIAL PROPOSALS We solicit tutorial proposals of interest to ER2001 attendees. Proposals should identify the intended audience and the scope of what will be covered. The target duration is 90 minutes. Proposals should be submitted to the tutorial chair, Katsumi Tanaka (tanaka@db.cs.kobe-u.ac.jp) by April 20, 2001. PANEL PROPOSALS We solicit proposals for panel sessions related to the conference topics. We strongly encourage panels with 2 academic and 2 industry panelists (plus the chair). We expect a range of viewpoints to be represented in the panel. The role of the chair is to state the initial relevant questions and moderate the session. The other panelists are asked to give a short talk, discuss issues within the panel and interact with the audience. Proposals should be submitted to the panel chair, Sudha Ram (ram@bpa.arizona.edu) by April 20, 2001. LOCAL INFORMATION ER2001 is being held in the Education and Culture Hall of Yokohama National University (http://www.ynu.ac.jp/).
