Document Developer's
SGML Workshop
June 23-27, 1997
Burlington, MA
T | he Document Developer's SGML Workshop is a five-day course which will give students the knowledge they need to help forward the SGML implementation process. The first day will avoid syntax but focus on understanding, interpreting and implementing the SGML standard. Specific topics include who uses SGML, where SGML is applicable, demonstrating SGML software tools, legacy data conversion strategies and how to perform a data analysis. The initial day will conclude with a data analysis exercise which will be used later on in the course to create a Document Type Definition (DTD). Information presented on days two, three and four involve learning the SGML syntax. Areas covered will be understanding the SGML Declaration, reading DTD's, writing DTD's, and creating SGML documents in regular editors and SGML editors. The syntax will be presented by use of handouts, written, oral, computer exercises as well as group exercises. The last day is designed to apply and absorb the knowledge from the first four days by creating a DTD from a document analysis report. DTD style, tips and techniques will be examined. The afternoon is reserved for a variety of topics including HTML, XML, HyTime, DSSSL and HyTime. After this class, students will be able to understand the stages of an SGML implementation, edit/create DTD's and author SGML documents. In cooperation with Adobe Systems, GCA will be holding this five day course at Adobe's training facilities.
