Readme for XPentateuch: Release .01 This release contains the texts of the Pentateuch (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy) from both the King James Version (KJV) and the Vulgate. These texts have not been proofed for accuracy against any known reference copy of these texts. They are meant for experimental purposes only and should not be used or distributed as accurate copies of the original texts. Canonical versions of the texts would have a full TEI Header and reference the TEI DTD. The XPentateuch texts have been released to allow biblical scholars to gain experience in the use of XLink and other mechanisms for annotating and constructing texts from XML encoded texts. Each word bears a unique ID constructed as follows: (Version)-(Book-Name).(Chapter).(Verse).(Word in Verse). This will allow scholars to attach annotations to individual words, vary the incorporation of these texts into another at the word level, or impose such divisions or arrangements upon the text as they desire, without changing the original text. My future plans include a Hebrew text of the Pentateuch with markup at the grapheme level to allow for marking of variants or insertion of annotations at the lowest level of the visible text. The XPentatuech texts differ from the excellent XML texts of the entire Bible released by Jon Bosak (Sun Microsystems) in that the later are better suited for testing and developing general XML techniques. For example, in the 2.0 release of those texts, chapter and verse numbering is left for autogeneration by XML mechanisms. That is a valuable technique for scholars to learn but encoding with a minimal level of markup at the word level with ID's encourages the imposition of structures on the text. I would recommend use of the Bosak texts to anyone learning XML techniques and they can then continue with the XPentateuch for a study of imposing stuctures on a text or various annotation techniques. A good starting point for text annotation techniques is the MATE (Multilevel Annotation, Tools Engineering) Project, http://mate.nis.sdu.dk/. This project focuses on annotating spoken discourse in a multilingual context. Another good starting place for tools and examples is the Edinburgh Language Technology Group, http://www.ltg.ed.ac.uk/index.html. Both resources can be reached through the Human Communications Research Center, an ESRC funded interdisciplinary research centre at the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, http://www.hcrc.ed.ac.uk/Site/site_home.html. This text is being distributed as "careware," that is the author is requesting that users of this text support a worthwhile goal or organization interested in this type of material. In this case I am requesting that interested readers should support the Society of Biblical Literature and request that they promote the production of this type of material. The Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) is the logical place for supporting the production of electronic versions of primary and secondary materials for biblical scholars. If you want to encourage them to support production of experimental texts such as these or even canonical versions, please visit the SBL website at: http://www.sbl-site.org/ and contact them about producing such texts. Expressions of support with an SBL membership, donation or reference to an interested funding agency are among the more effective ones. Please note that the SBL has not supported, endorsed or approved of this text for any purpose. This text and its errors are solely the responsibility of the author. Please contact Patrick Durusau, pdurusau@emory.edu, with any questions or comments on this text.
