--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am pleased to announce the publication of the Third Interim Report of the
Project Editor's Review of ISO 8879 (WG8 N1855). It is available at the web site
I maintain for the current information set of the Review
(http://www.sgmlsource.com/Goldfarb/8879rev).
The report was produced at the Munich meeting of Working Group 8, which some 20+
members attended. In addition to detailed work on character sets, the SGML
declaration, and the SGML Extended Facilities, we examined previous documents of
the Review and incorporated them into the Third Interim Report. Now you can get
up to speed by reading just one document (well, maybe two).
Thanks to all of you who have contributed comments on ISO 8879. This report will
give you an idea of how we are handling them (although not all have been
addressed as yet).
As the Interim Report indicates, we are now moving into the final phases of the
Review, which will result in proposed (backward compatible) revisions to the
standard. We are exploring means, in conjunction with the GCA and the SGML
Users' Group, to increase public involvement in the review process while still
observing ISO procedures. The web site is the first step in that direction.
Another is co-locating committee meetings with GCA conferences, which proved
very successful in Munich. As other steps are implemented, information will be
posted to this news group.
