BEA WebLogic to Support Siebel UAN

BEA and Siebel Systems Expand Alliance to Deliver Integration Solutions for Universal Application Network

Customers Speed Time to Value and Minimize Long-Term Cost of Ownership for Application Integration With Emerging Integration and Process Standards

San Jose and San Mateo, California, USA. April 28, 2003.

BEA Systems, Inc., the world's leading application infrastructure software company, and Siebel Systems, Inc., a leading provider of multichannel eBusiness applications software, today announced an expansion of their strategic alliance agreement to deliver integration solutions through joint development, sales and marketing initiatives. Designed to help customers speed the time to value and minimize the long-term cost of ownership for business process integration projects, Siebel Systems and BEA are collaborating around emerging integration and process standards.

Expanding on their successful alliance, Siebel Systems has named BEA a Strategic Software and Universal Application Network (UAN) Partner in the Siebel Alliance Program and designated BEA WebLogic Integration as one of its strategic integration solutions for UAN, a standards-based approach to multiapplication integration based on best-practice business processes. BEA plans to offer full out-of-the-box support for UAN in upcoming versions of BEA WebLogic Integration and BEA WebLogic Platform. The companies are committing additional resources as a part of their alliance, which include dedicated engineers, technical architects, product managers, and alliance managers; an on-site interoperability testing laboratory; joint development; and over $1 million in marketing to deliver integration solutions.

Delivering Easy Integration

The cost of integration is rapidly becoming a significant barrier to the deployment of new business applications for large corporations. According to a CIO Magazine 2002 survey, linking disparate business processes and applications is a CIOs' top spending priority. Across industries, businesses are finding that they need to automate and extend core business processes beyond the enterprise in order to offer new services and streamline customer- and partner-facing applications and processes.

The alliance between BEA and Siebel Systems is designed to address these challenges by offering a preintegrated, standards-based solution on BEA WebLogic Integration and UAN. Siebel Systems provides UAN Integration Applications that enable organizations to deploy end-to-end business processes spanning multiple applications as well as front-office, back-office, and custom applications designed for extensibility and customization. BEA's standards-based integration solution, BEA WebLogic Integration, is a comprehensive, unified integration platform designed to run UAN Integration Applications-connecting users, information and systems across the enterprise. Together, UAN Integration Applications and BEA WebLogic Integration can simplify a customer's ability to develop, implement, and integrate enterprise applications and custom processes that align more directly with business goals.

"BEA and Siebel Systems share a common mission -- to reduce the cost, complexity and time it takes customers to deliver new applications and services to their partners, customers and workforces," said Bharath Kadaba, vice president and general manager, UAN, Siebel Systems, Inc. "The combination of Siebel Systems' UAN Integration Applications and the BEA WebLogic application development, integration, and deployment platform can provide proven solutions for Global 2000 companies."

Leveraging Open Standards for Open Solutions

BEA and Siebel Systems are collaborating around the emerging integration and process standards, namely Business Process Execution Language for Web Services (BPEL4WS), XML Schema, XML Query Language (XQuery), Extensible Stylesheet Transformation (XSLT) and the J2EE Connector Architecture, within BEA WebLogic Integration 8.1 and UAN. In addition, BEA WebLogic Workshop will be designed to provide out-of-the-box support for integration with Siebel Application Service Interfaces (ASI) and Web Services. These solutions can offer customers quicker and less expensive ways to build and deploy integrated Web Services applications.

"The IT world is no longer flat. It's round and revolves around solving business problems with the convergence of application development and integration," said Morris Beton, senior vice president, business development, BEA Systems, Inc. "BEA and Siebel Systems believe this convergence will simplify building, integrating and extending applications and business processes for our customers. With Universal Application Network, Siebel Systems is taking a leadership position to define a model that will help speed the time to value for business integration projects. BEA and Siebel Systems plan to align our businesses in order to offer thousands of customers a more simplified and valuable approach to business integration."

Business Alignment

Siebel Systems and BEA have been working together since 1999 to successfully solve business process integration challenges for joint customers around the world. The two companies have aligned their development, sales and marketing resources to provide customers a more cost-effective solution that addresses these enterprise-wide challenges:

  • Development: BEA and Siebel Systems engineers have defined a mutually agreeable implementation of the BPEL4WS specification designed to assure integration and interoperability between UAN and BEA WebLogic Integration 8.1. In addition, the engineering teams have simplified the deployment of business integration projects by providing a truly productive development framework, BEA WebLogic Workshop 8.1, for corporate developers. This development environment also will provide customers greater design-level reuse of UAN Integration Applications, which will reduce development times and improve application integration speed and flexibility.

  • Sales: BEA and Siebel Systems are conducting field engagements and proof of concepts with joint customers to demonstrate the value of this joint solution. In addition, the companies are leading regular training sessions across their respective sales regions with specific focus on the communications and financial services markets. BEA and Siebel Systems provide customers with industry-specific solutions, which enable quick deployment for faster return on investment and flexibility and ease of modification to preserve investments and minimize long-term cost of ownership for application integration.

  • Marketing: BEA and Siebel Systems have participated, and continue to engage, in global field and corporate marketing activities including sponsorships at numerous user seminars and conferences.

Industry Support

The agreement between these two companies is further strengthened by support from such industry leaders as Accenture and HP, who will be working with BEA and Siebel Systems to deliver the BEA WebLogic Integration-UAN solution. BEA has designated HP hardware as the preferred hardware platform for the BEA WebLogic Integration-UAN solution. Accenture, HP, Siebel Systems and BEA are aligned on UAN activity in sales accounts today, and they will further strengthen the relationship designating Accenture and HP as BEA's strategic global systems integrators for BEA WebLogic Integration implementations on UAN.

"HP enterprise customers are looking for standards-based technologies and solutions that improve performance while lowering the total IT cost of ownership," said Janice Chaffin, vice president, Enterprise Marketing and Solutions, HP Enterprise Systems Group. "The business integration solution comprising UAN and BEA WebLogic on HP hardware, complemented by HP services, will raise the bar in helping customers simplify enterprise integrations, rapidly deploy new applications and adapt quickly to changing business environments."

UAN for BEA WebLogic Integration 7.0 is available now for select customers. BEA WebLogic Integration 8.1, currently available in beta version, will support UAN Integration Applications in the summer of 2003. BEA WebLogic Integration can provide the optimal tools and frameworks for extending UAN Integration Applications to integrate with packaged applications, legacy systems and custom applications.
